RCBO
An RCBO (residual current breaker with overcurrent protection) combines the functions of a miniature circuit breaker and residual current device in a single unit. It provides protection against overloads, short circuits and earth leakage faults within the same device. Commonly used in modern switchboards, RCBOs simplify circuit protection by reducing the need for separate devices while maintaining compliance with installation standards across residential and commercial applications.
What Is an RCBO?
An RCBO provides combined protection by disconnecting a circuit under both overcurrent and earth leakage conditions. This removes the need to install separate protective devices for each function, streamlining circuit design and reducing installation complexity.
By integrating both protections into a single module, RCBOs are well suited to compact switchboards where space is limited. This modular approach allows individual circuits to be independently protected, improving fault isolation and reducing disruption across the installation.
RCBO vs Circuit Breaker vs RCD
Circuit breakers provide overcurrent protection only, protecting cables and circuits from overload and short circuit conditions. RCD devices are designed to detect earth leakage faults and disconnect supply to reduce risk of electric shock. An RCBO combines both functions in one device, delivering overcurrent and earth leakage protection at the circuit level.
Choosing the Right RCBO
Selecting the correct RCBO requires consideration of circuit and installation requirements. Current rating (amps) must align with cable capacity and expected load. Sensitivity, typically rated in milliamps (mA), determines the level of earth leakage protection required for the application.
Pole configuration should match the circuit design, including single-phase and multi-pole arrangements where applicable. Compatibility with the switchboard system is also critical, ensuring the RCBO integrates correctly with associated panel boards and the wider electrical distribution setup.
Application & Integration
RCBOs are installed within switchboards to provide combined protection at the circuit level. When correctly specified and matched to system requirements, they support safe operation and efficient fault management across residential and commercial installations, particularly where space and circuit-level protection are key considerations.
