RCD
An RCD (residual current device), also known as an RCCB or safety switch, is designed to protect against electric shock by detecting earth leakage faults. It monitors the balance of current flowing through active and neutral conductors and disconnects supply when an imbalance is detected. Commonly installed in switchboards, RCDs provide essential personal protection across residential, commercial and industrial installations where electrical safety is critical.
What Is an RCD?
An RCD operates by continuously comparing the current entering and leaving a circuit. If a difference is detected—indicating current leakage to earth—the device trips and disconnects the circuit.
This function provides protection against indirect contact and reduces the risk of serious injury. Trip sensitivity is measured in milliamps (mA), with 30mA RCD devices commonly used for personal protection. Higher-rated devices may be used where nuisance tripping needs to be managed or where protection requirements differ.
RCD vs RCBO
An RCBO provides both earth leakage and overcurrent protection in a single device. An RCD provides earth leakage protection only and must be used alongside separate circuit breakers for overcurrent protection.
Choosing the Right RCD
Selecting the correct RCD depends on circuit configuration and installation requirements. Pole configuration should match the system design, including single-phase and three-phase applications.
Sensitivity rating is a key factor, with 30mA devices typically specified for personal protection. Consideration should also be given to installation location, load characteristics and coordination with other electrical distribution components.
RCDs must be compatible with the switchboard assembly, ensuring correct integration with panel boards and alignment with broader safety products used across the installation.
Application & Integration
RCDs are installed within switchboards to provide dedicated earth leakage protection at the circuit or group level. Correct specification and installation support compliance with Australian standards while ensuring effective personal protection across residential and commercial environments.
