Surge Protection Devices
Surge protection devices (SPD), also known as surge diverters or lightning protection devices, are used to protect electrical systems from transient overvoltages. These voltage spikes can result from lightning strikes, switching events or network disturbances. Installed within switchboards, SPDs divert excess voltage away from sensitive equipment, helping to prevent damage and maintain system reliability across residential, commercial and industrial installations.
What Is a Surge Protection Device?
A surge protection device is designed to limit transient overvoltage by redirecting excess energy safely to earth. When a voltage spike occurs, the SPD activates and reduces the voltage to a safe level, protecting connected equipment and infrastructure.
SPDs are typically installed at key points within an installation, such as the main switchboard or sub-distribution boards. Their role is to safeguard electrical systems and connected devices from damage caused by sudden voltage increases.
Type 1 vs Type 2 SPD
Type 1 SPDs are installed at the point of entry and are designed to handle high-energy surges, such as those caused by direct lightning strikes. They are typically used in installations with external lightning protection systems or high exposure to surge events.
Type 2 SPDs are installed downstream within distribution boards and provide protection against residual surges and switching transients. They are commonly used in standard commercial and residential installations to protect circuits and equipment.
Integration Within Switchboards
Surge protection devices are installed within switchboards to provide system-wide voltage protection. They are commonly integrated into panel board assemblies and coordinated with devices such as circuit breakers to ensure safe installation and isolation where required.
SPDs also form part of broader safety systems and are used within complete electrical distribution layouts to protect infrastructure and connected loads from transient events.
Application & Integration
Surge protection devices provide a critical layer of protection against voltage spikes within electrical installations. When correctly specified and installed, they help reduce equipment damage, minimise downtime and support reliable operation across a wide range of electrical systems.
