What Are Circuit Breakers?
Circuit breakers provide protection by interrupting current when it exceeds safe operating levels. This includes overload conditions, where sustained excess current can damage cables, and short circuits, where fault current rises rapidly.
Breaking capacity, measured in kiloamps (kA), defines the maximum fault current the device can safely interrupt. Selecting an appropriate kA rating is essential based on site fault levels.
In residential installations, breakers are commonly used to protect final subcircuits. In commercial and industrial environments, they are applied across larger systems where higher fault currents and more complex load arrangements are present.
Choosing the Right Circuit Breaker
Selecting the correct circuit breaker depends on circuit design and installation requirements. Pole configuration must match the system, with options including single pole breaker units for standard circuits and multi-pole devices for three-phase applications.
Current rating (amps) should align with cable capacity and expected load. Breaking capacity must suit the available fault current at the installation point.
Compatibility with switchboard assemblies is also critical. Circuit breakers must integrate correctly with associated panel boards and load centres, and operate reliably within broader electrical distribution products used across the system.
Circuit Breakers vs RCBO & RCD
Circuit breakers provide overcurrent protection only. An RCBO combines overcurrent and earth leakage protection in one device, while an RCD is designed specifically to detect earth leakage faults. These devices perform different functions and are selected based on the required protection type.
